BREAST REDUCTION IN ANTALYA
Breast reduction, medically known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes selected breast tissue, fat and excess skin while reshaping the remaining breast tissue. Depending on individual anatomy, the nipple and areola may also be repositioned.
At Dr. Seckin Oksar’s practice in Antalya, breast reduction is planned according to breast volume, skin excess, nipple position, breast width, asymmetry and overall chest proportions. The amount of tissue removed is determined individually rather than according to a predetermined cup size.
WHAT IS BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?
Breast reduction decreases breast volume while reshaping the breast.
During surgery, selected breast tissue, fat and excess skin are removed. The remaining breast tissue is repositioned, and the skin envelope is adjusted to the new breast shape.
The nipple and areola may also need to be moved to a different position while remaining connected to underlying tissue that maintains their blood supply.
The surgical technique depends on factors such as:
- Existing breast size.
- Amount of tissue and skin to be removed.
- Nipple position.
- Breast width.
- Breast asymmetry.
- Skin characteristics.
- Previous breast surgery.
For this reason, breast reduction does not follow a single surgical pattern.
WHY MAY BREAST REDUCTION BE CONSIDERED?
Individuals with larger breasts may seek assessment because of breast weight, skin changes or limitations during daily activities.
Concerns discussed during examination may include:
- Neck, shoulder or back discomfort.
- Marks from bra straps.
- Skin irritation beneath the breasts.
- Difficulty during certain physical activities.
- A feeling of breast heaviness.
- Difficulty finding supportive clothing.
- Differences in breast size or position.
These symptoms can have several causes, so an individual medical assessment is necessary rather than assuming that breast size is the only contributing factor.
HOW IS BREAST REDUCTION PLANNED?
Planning begins with examination of the breasts and chest while standing.
The surgeon evaluates the relationship between the breast, nipple, inframammary fold and chest wall.
Measurements may include breast width, nipple position and the amount of skin excess. Breast tissue distribution and natural asymmetry are also assessed.
The surgical plan must balance the desired reduction with preservation of appropriate blood supply to the nipple and remaining breast tissue.
The amount removed may therefore differ between the two breasts when natural asymmetry is present.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE NIPPLE AND AREOLA?
In many breast reduction techniques, the nipple and areola are repositioned while remaining attached to underlying breast tissue.
This tissue connection contains blood vessels that support the nipple-areola complex.
The amount of repositioning depends on the starting breast anatomy.
Possible changes in nipple sensation and the potential effect on future breastfeeding should be discussed before surgery.
Temporary or permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation can occur after breast reduction.
WHERE ARE BREAST REDUCTION INCISIONS LOCATED?
The incision pattern depends mainly on the amount of skin that needs to be removed and the degree of breast reshaping required.
Possible incision locations include:
- Around the areola.
- Vertically from the areola toward the breast fold.
- Along the inframammary fold when additional skin removal is required.
A combination of these incisions may create an inverted-T or anchor-shaped pattern.
Not every breast reduction requires the same incision arrangement.
All breast reduction procedures create permanent scars. Scars usually change in colour and texture during the months following surgery but do not disappear completely.
CAN A SPECIFIC CUP SIZE BE GUARANTEED?
No.
Bra cup sizes are not standardised between manufacturers, and the final breast size depends on the starting anatomy, amount of tissue that can appropriately be removed and postoperative healing.
Surgical planning therefore focuses on breast dimensions and proportional reduction rather than guaranteeing a specific future cup size.
Swelling during early recovery also prevents accurate assessment of final breast size immediately after surgery.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?
The duration of surgery varies according to breast anatomy and the amount of tissue being addressed.

Breast reduction is performed under anaesthesia.

Before surgery, markings are made according to the planned incision pattern and areas of tissue removal.

Tissue removal and reshaping
During the operation, selected breast tissue, fat and excess skin are removed. The remaining tissue is reshaped, and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned when required.

Closure
The incisions are then closed with surgical sutures. Dressings and a supportive surgical bra may be applied following surgery.

Physical activity is increased gradually as healing progresses.
Temporary restrictions may include:

I went to Antalya to originally get a scar revision and abdominal etching as due to a previous botched surgery, I was left with a horrible keloid scar and uneven abdominal. I was very hesitant at first due to my previous experience. But Dr.Seckin is well recommended by a close friend. He made me feel at ease with the operation. He corrected my scar and did a correction mini tummy tuck plus abdominal etching. I cannot recommend him enough. He is an amazing professional Doctor.

BREAST REDUCTION SCARS
Scarring is an unavoidable part of breast reduction because skin and tissue must be removed.
During early healing, scars may appear red, pink, firm or more visible.
They usually change gradually during the following months as scar tissue matures.
Scar appearance is influenced by:
- Skin type.
- Genetics.
- Wound tension.
- Individual healing characteristics.
- Smoking or nicotine use.
- Previous scar behaviour.
People with a history of raised or thick scars should discuss this before surgery.
BREASTFEEDING AND PREGNANCY AFTER BREAST REDUCTION
Breastfeeding may still be possible after breast reduction, but future breastfeeding ability cannot be guaranteed.
The procedure changes breast tissue and may affect milk-producing structures or ducts depending on the surgical technique.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding can also change breast volume, skin elasticity and breast position after surgery.
Future pregnancy plans should therefore be discussed during the preoperative assessment.
CAN THE BREASTS CHANGE AGAIN AFTER SURGERY?
Yes.
Breast reduction changes the breast anatomy at the time of surgery, but it does not prevent future biological changes.
Breast size and position can be affected by:
- Pregnancy.
- Breastfeeding.
- Weight gain.
- Weight loss.
- Hormonal changes.
- Ageing.
- Changes in breast tissue over time.
A relatively stable body weight can help reduce one source of future volume change, but natural tissue changes continue.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS?
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure and carries potential complications.
Possible risks include:
- Bleeding or haematoma.
- Infection.
- Fluid accumulation.
- Delayed wound healing.
- Wound separation.
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation.
- Visible or raised scars.
- Breast asymmetry.
