A chin that appears relatively small does not always represent an isolated chin concern. Jaw position, facial skeleton and, where relevant, dental relationships may also need to be considered.

The chin is evaluated from the front and profile.
Assessment may include:

- Chin height and width.

When surgical augmentation is appropriate, the implant is selected according to the existing bone structure and the degree of projection or contour change being considered.
There is no standard implant size suitable for every face.
HOW IS CHIN AUGMENTATION PERFORMED?
Surgical chin augmentation may involve placement of an implant over the chin bone.
A pocket is created in the planned anatomical position and the implant is inserted according to the required projection and width.
The incision may be positioned beneath the chin or inside the mouth depending on the surgical approach.
An external incision creates a skin scar, while an intraoral incision is located within the mouth.
The appropriate approach is determined according to implant position, anatomy and the operative plan.
WHAT IS CHEEK AUGMENTATION?
Cheek augmentation is used to modify projection or volume in selected parts of the midface.
Cheek appearance is influenced by several structures, including:
- Cheekbones.
- Midface bone structure.
- Facial fat.
- Skin thickness.
- Surrounding muscles.
- Lower eyelid anatomy.
The cheek therefore should not be evaluated as an isolated point.
Its relationship with the lower eyelid, nose and other facial structures is considered during planning.
WHICH AREAS OF THE CHEEK CAN BE AUGMENTED?
Different implant designs can influence different regions of the cheek. Depending on the anatomy, augmentation may focus on:
Lateral cheekbone
Projection of the outer cheekbone region.
Central midface
Projection of the central part of the midface.
Anterior cheek
Contour of the front surface of the cheek.
Zygomatic region
Selected areas of the zygomatic region.
The implant position is selected according to the existing facial structure and intended degree of augmentation. The aim is not to use the largest possible implant but to select dimensions appropriate for the individual anatomy.
HOW ARE CHEEK IMPLANTS PLACED?
Cheek implants may be inserted through an incision inside the mouth in certain surgical approaches.
Other incision routes may also be considered depending on the required access.
A surgical pocket is created over the planned area of the facial skeleton. The implant is then positioned and assessed for orientation, symmetry and stability.
When an intraoral incision is used, postoperative oral hygiene becomes particularly important during healing.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING CHIN OR CHEEK AUGMENTATION SURGERY?
Dressings or temporary external support may be used depending on the area treated.

I went to Antalya to originally get a scar revision and abdominal etching as due to a previous botched surgery, I was left with a horrible keloid scar and uneven abdominal. HOW LONG DOES SWELLING LAST?
Swelling decreases gradually during recovery.
A significant proportion generally changes during the early weeks, while subtle swelling and tissue firmness may remain for longer.
The tissues also need time to adapt around the implant.
The facial contour should therefore not be considered final immediately after surgery.
CAN FACIAL IMPLANTS MOVE?
Implant displacement is a recognised potential complication.
The surgical pocket is created to correspond with the intended implant position, and surrounding tissues contribute to implant stability as healing progresses.
However, trauma or other factors can influence implant position.
Avoiding unnecessary pressure and protecting the treated area during early recovery are therefore important.
ARE CHIN AND CHEEK IMPLANTS PERMANENT?
Facial implants are designed for long-term placement, but this does not mean that future treatment will never be required.
Further surgery may become necessary because of:
- Implant displacement.
- Infection.
- Trauma.
- Changes in surrounding tissues.
- Implant-related symptoms.
- A decision to remove or replace the implant.
The condition of the implant and surrounding tissues should therefore be considered over time.
CAN CHIN AUGMENTATION AFFECT THE JAWLINE OR NECK?
The chin, jawline and neck are visually connected.
Increasing chin projection can influence how the lower facial profile and the angle between the jaw and neck are perceived.
However, chin augmentation does not remove loose neck skin or directly change the entire jaw.
Other anatomical concerns should be assessed separately.
CAN CHEEK AUGMENTATION AFFECT THE UNDER-EYE AREA?
The cheek and lower eyelid are anatomically related.
Changes in cheek projection may influence the contour transition between these areas.
However, cheek augmentation is not automatically a treatment for lower eyelid bags, skin laxity or dark circles.
The lower eyelid and cheek should be assessed separately when concerns involve both regions.
FACIAL ASYMMETRY AND AUGMENTATION
Natural facial asymmetry is common.
One cheekbone may be more prominent than the other, or the chin may sit slightly away from the facial midline.
Surgical planning can take these differences into account.
However, exact bilateral symmetry cannot be guaranteed because the underlying bone and soft tissue structures may themselves be different.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS?
Chin and cheek augmentation are surgical procedures and carry potential complications.
Possible risks include:
- Bleeding or haematoma.
- Infection.
- Swelling.
- Delayed wound healing.
- Changes in sensation.
- Facial asymmetry.
- Implant displacement.
- Visible or palpable implant edges.
- Scar formation.
- Changes in surrounding soft tissues.
- Nerve-related sensory changes.
- Implant exposure.
- Need for implant removal.
- Need for additional surgery.
Temporary numbness or altered sensation can occur because sensory nerves pass through the chin and midface regions.
Persistent sensory changes are also possible.
