EYELID SURGERY IN ANTALYA
Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to address specific anatomical changes affecting the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. Depending on individual anatomy, surgery may involve selected skin, fat compartments and supporting eyelid tissues.
At Dr. Seckin Oksar’s practice in Antalya, eyelid surgery is planned after evaluating the eyelids together with surrounding facial structures. Skin quality, brow position, fat distribution, eyelid support and the relationship between the lower eyelid and cheek are considered before a surgical plan is determined.
WHAT IS BLEPHAROPLASTY?
Blepharoplasty refers to surgery of the eyelids.
Upper eyelid surgery generally focuses on changes involving excess skin and, where appropriate, underlying fat or other tissues.
Lower eyelid surgery may address prominent fat compartments, skin laxity and changes in the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek.
Upper and lower blepharoplasty are different procedures and should be assessed separately. Tissue does not always need to be removed; preservation or repositioning may also form part of the surgical plan.
WHAT CAN UPPER EYELID SURGERY ADDRESS?
Upper eyelid appearance is influenced by several structures, including:
- Upper eyelid skin.
- Eyelid crease.
- Fat compartments.
- Brow position.
- Eyelid-opening muscles.
- Surrounding bone structure.
Some individuals develop excess skin above the natural eyelid crease, while others have fullness related partly to fat distribution or eyebrow position.
For this reason, the eyebrow and upper eyelid are evaluated together before surgery.
WHAT CAN LOWER EYELID SURGERY ADDRESS?
Lower eyelid surgery may be considered for anatomical changes such as:
- Prominent lower eyelid fat.
- Skin laxity.
- Fine skin folds.
- Changes in the eyelid-cheek transition.
- Differences in eyelid support.
- Natural asymmetry.
Fullness beneath the eyes may have several causes. The relationship between fat compartments, skin, eyelid support and the upper cheek must therefore be assessed before deciding what should be removed, preserved or repositioned.
HOW IS EYELID SURGERY PLANNED?
The eyelids are examined both at rest and during facial movement.
Upper eyelid assessment may include skin redundancy, eyelid crease position, fat distribution, eyebrow level, eyelid movement and symmetry.
Lower eyelid assessment includes skin elasticity, fat prominence, eyelid position, support and the relationship between the eyelid and cheek.
Previous eye surgery, dry-eye symptoms, contact lens use and regular eye medication should also be discussed before surgery.
Natural facial asymmetry is common. One eyebrow may sit higher, one eyelid crease may differ or one side may show more visible eyelid skin. These differences are documented during examination.
WHAT HAPPENS TO EYELID FAT?
Eyelid fat does not always need to be removed.
Depending on individual anatomy, fat may be:
- Conservatively removed.
- Preserved.
- Repositioned.
Removing excessive volume can increase hollowing around the eyes. The surgical approach should therefore be based on the location and amount of existing tissue rather than automatically removing visible fat.
WHERE ARE THE INCISIONS LOCATED?
The appropriate incision depends on skin excess, fat distribution, eyelid support and the surgical plan.
Upper eyelid crease
For upper blepharoplasty, the incision is commonly positioned within the natural upper eyelid crease. This provides access to the required tissues while placing the scar within an existing fold where anatomy allows.
Subciliary incision
A subciliary incision can be positioned close to the lower eyelashes when skin needs to be addressed.
Transconjunctival approach
A transconjunctival approach uses an incision on the inner surface of the lower eyelid and may provide access to fat compartments without an external skin incision.
Every external surgical incision creates a scar, although eyelid scars generally change significantly as healing progresses.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING EYELID SURGERY?
Preserving eyelid function and appropriate support is an important part of surgical planning.

Blepharoplasty is performed using an anaesthetic method selected according to the operation and individual medical assessment.

Surgical markings are made before the procedure.

Upper eyelid
During upper eyelid surgery, selected excess skin may be removed and deeper tissues addressed where necessary.

During lower eyelid surgery, fat compartments may be accessed through an internal or external incision. Skin and supporting tissues may also be adjusted when indicated.

Bruising and swelling around the eyes are common during early recovery.
Temporary symptoms may include:
- Tightness.
- Watering.
- Dryness.
- Mild irritation.
- Light sensitivity.
- Temporary blurred vision related to swelling or eye ointments.
Cold applications, elevation of the head and prescribed eye lubrication may be recommended depending on the surgical plan.
Rubbing or placing unnecessary pressure on the eyelids should be avoided during early healing.
External sutures may be removed during an early follow-up examination when appropriate. Some sutures may be absorbable.

My surgery experience with Dr. Seckin Oksar was amazing.I’m from Chicago USA. I went to Antalya to originally get a scar revision and abdominal etching as due to a previous botched surgery, I was left with a horrible keloid scar and uneven abdominal. I was very hesitant at first due to my previous experience. But Dr.Seckin is well recommended by a close friend. He made me feel at ease with the operation. He corrected my scar and did a correction mini tummy tuck plus abdominal etching. I cannot recommend him enough. He is an amazing professional Doctor.

WHEN DOES SWELLING DECREASE?
The most visible swelling and bruising generally change progressively during the first stage of recovery.
Residual puffiness may remain for longer and can sometimes be more noticeable in the morning.
Both sides may not heal at exactly the same rate.
The eyelid contour should therefore not be judged during the earliest postoperative period. Scar maturation and subtle tissue changes may continue after visible bruising has resolved.
DRY EYES AND BLEPHAROPLASTY
Dry-eye symptoms are an important consideration before eyelid surgery.
The eyelids help protect the eye surface and distribute tears during blinking. Temporary dryness or irritation may occur following blepharoplasty.
Individuals with pre-existing dry eyes, previous eye surgery or regular use of eye medication should provide this information during the assessment.
Additional eye evaluation may be appropriate when specific ocular conditions are present.
CAN EYELID SURGERY TREAT DARK CIRCLES?
Not every dark circle is caused by the same anatomical factor.
Possible causes include:
- Skin pigmentation.
- Thin skin.
- Visible blood vessels.
- Anatomical shadowing.
- Lower eyelid fat.
- Changes in the eyelid-cheek junction.
Blepharoplasty can modify selected anatomical tissues but does not treat every cause of under-eye darkness.
The source of the visible shadow or colour must therefore be identified before deciding whether surgery is relevant.
CAN BLEPHAROPLASTY CHANGE EYE SHAPE?
Standard blepharoplasty does not automatically mean changing the natural shape of the eyes.
Eye shape is influenced by eyelid position, supporting ligaments, bone structure, the outer corner of the eye and lower eyelid support.
These structures are evaluated before surgery, particularly when lower eyelid support requires additional attention.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS?
Eyelid surgery carries potential complications like any surgical procedure.
Possible risks include:
- Bleeding.
- Infection.
- Dry eyes.
- Delayed wound healing.
- Changes in sensation.
- Visible scars.
- Asymmetry.
- Difficulty closing the eyes.
- Changes in eyelid position.
- Lower eyelid retraction.
- Ectropion.
- Temporary visual changes.
- Need for additional surgery.
Serious visual complications are uncommon but are recognised risks of surgery around the eyes. Significant visual changes, severe pain or unexpected symptoms after surgery require prompt medical assessment.
HOW LONG DO EYELID SURGERY RESULTS LAST?
Blepharoplasty changes the eyelid tissues present at the time of surgery but does not stop the ageing process.
Over time, skin elasticity, brow position, facial volume and surrounding tissues may continue to change.
For this reason, the eyelid area cannot be guaranteed to remain unchanged permanently.
