GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY IN ANTALYA
Gynecomastia is a condition involving enlargement of male breast tissue. The appearance of the chest may be influenced by glandular tissue, subcutaneous fat, excess skin or a combination of these components.
Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is planned according to which tissues are responsible for the enlargement rather than using the same surgical technique for every chest.
At Dr. Seckin Oksar’s practice in Antalya, gynecomastia surgery begins with an individual assessment of chest anatomy, breast tissue, fat distribution, skin quality and nipple-areola position. Medical history and factors that may contribute to breast enlargement are also reviewed before a surgical plan is determined.
WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia refers to enlargement of glandular breast tissue in males.
Chest enlargement can also occur predominantly because of fatty tissue. In some individuals, glandular tissue and fat are both present.
Distinguishing between these tissue components is important because they may require different surgical approaches.
Gynecomastia can affect one or both sides of the chest, and the degree of enlargement may differ between the two sides.
HOW IS GYNECOMASTIA EVALUATED?
The chest is examined while standing.
The surgeon evaluates:
- Distribution of glandular tissue.
- Amount of subcutaneous fat.
- Skin elasticity.
- Nipple and areola position.
- Chest width.
- Differences between the two sides.
- Presence of excess skin.
- Previous surgical scars.
The tissue beneath and around the nipple is also examined because glandular tissue is commonly concentrated in this area.
The purpose of the assessment is to determine which tissues contribute to the existing chest contour.
WHAT CAN CAUSE MALE BREAST ENLARGEMENT?
Male breast enlargement can have several possible contributing factors.
These may include hormonal changes, certain medications, substantial body-weight changes and other medical or physiological factors.
In some cases, no single identifiable cause is established.
Medication and supplement use should therefore be discussed during assessment. Use of hormonal or performance-enhancing substances should also be disclosed because they can be relevant to breast tissue changes.
When the clinical history or examination suggests that further medical investigation may be appropriate, additional assessment may be required before surgery is considered.
GYNECOMASTIA AND CHEST FAT
Not every enlarged male chest has the same tissue composition.
When enlargement is primarily related to fatty tissue, liposuction may form an important part of the surgical plan.
When firm glandular tissue is present, direct surgical removal may be required because glandular tissue does not respond to liposuction in the same way as fat.
Many cases involve a combination of both tissue types.
The procedure is therefore determined after physical examination rather than selecting liposuction or tissue excision in advance.
WHO MAY BE EVALUATED FOR GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?
Gynecomastia surgery may be considered in adults with persistent chest enlargement who are medically suitable for elective surgery.
Factors considered during evaluation include:
- Amount and type of breast tissue.
- Skin quality.
- Body-weight stability.
- Chest asymmetry.
- Medical history.
- Medication and supplement use.
- Nicotine use.
- Previous operations.
- Conditions that may influence hormone levels or wound healing.
A stable body weight is relevant because significant weight changes can alter chest fat and skin after surgery.
HOW IS GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY PERFORMED?
The surgical technique depends on the tissue responsible for the enlargement. Three general approaches may be considered:
Liposuction
When excess fatty tissue forms a significant component of the chest enlargement, liposuction may be used. A thin tube called a cannula is inserted through small incisions and used to remove selected subcutaneous fat.
Glandular tissue excision
When glandular breast tissue is present, direct surgical excision may be required. The incision is commonly planned around part of the areola or another location according to the amount and distribution of tissue.
Combined technique
Some individuals have both glandular tissue and excess fat. In these cases, liposuction and direct tissue excision may be combined within the same operation.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS EXCESS SKIN?
Skin elasticity varies considerably.
In cases involving more limited chest enlargement and suitable skin characteristics, the skin may adapt to the reduced volume after tissue removal.
Where substantial skin excess is present, additional skin removal may be required.
This can result in longer scars than those used for liposuction or limited glandular excision alone.
The amount of excess skin and nipple position are therefore evaluated before surgery.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE NIPPLE AND AREOLA?
The nipple and areola may remain in their existing position in many gynecomastia procedures.
However, when substantial skin excess or tissue enlargement has changed nipple position, additional surgical adjustment may be considered.
Areola size may also be evaluated when relevant to the anatomy.
Any incision around the areola creates a scar. Scar appearance changes during healing and varies according to individual skin and scar characteristics.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?
A compression garment is commonly used during recovery, and temporary drains may be used in some surgical plans when fluid accumulation is a concern.

Surgery is performed using an anaesthetic approach determined by the operative plan and medical assessment.

The planned incisions are made according to whether liposuction, tissue excision or both techniques are required.

Selected fatty tissue is removed with a cannula when liposuction is included. Glandular tissue is removed directly when excision is required.

I went to Antalya to originally get a scar revision and abdominal etching as due to a previous botched surgery, I was left with a horrible keloid scar and uneven abdominal. I was very hesitant at first due to my previous experience. But Dr.Seckin is well recommended by a close friend. He made me feel at ease with the operation. WHEN CAN EXERCISE RESUME?
Return to exercise is progressive.
Activities involving the chest, shoulders and upper arms place greater stress on the surgical area than routine walking.
Weight training, push-ups and other exercises that directly load the chest may therefore require a longer restriction.
The appropriate timing depends on the extent of tissue removal, incision pattern and individual healing.
HOW LONG DOES SWELLING LAST?
Swelling gradually decreases after surgery.
The chest can initially appear firm, uneven or more swollen on one side.
These early differences do not necessarily represent the final contour.
A substantial proportion of swelling changes during the first weeks, but subtle swelling and tissue firmness may persist for longer.
The final chest contour should therefore be assessed after sufficient healing.
CAN GYNECOMASTIA RETURN?
The tissues removed during surgery do not simply return in the same form, but future chest changes are possible.
Factors that can alter the chest after surgery include:
- Significant weight gain.
- Hormonal changes.
- Certain medications.
- Use of anabolic or hormonal substances.
- Other medical conditions.
The underlying factors identified before surgery therefore remain relevant after the operation.
Prescription medication should never be discontinued without discussion with the prescribing healthcare professional.
