A full tummy tuck, medically known as full abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to address excess abdominal skin and selected changes in the abdominal wall. Depending on individual anatomy, surgery may involve removal of excess skin, tightening of the abdominal wall when required, and repositioning of the belly button within the reshaped abdominal skin.

WHAT IS A FULL TUMMY TUCK?
A full tummy tuck generally addresses the abdomen above and below the belly button. During surgery, excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is repositioned. When separation or weakness of the central abdominal wall is identified, this area may also be repaired.
Because the upper abdominal skin is moved downward, the belly button usually requires a new opening in the repositioned skin while remaining attached to its deeper structures.
The amount of skin removed and the need for abdominal wall repair depend on the findings identified during examination.
WHO MAY BE EVALUATED FOR SURGERY?
A full tummy tuck may be considered when excess abdominal skin or specific abdominal wall changes are present and the individual is medically suitable for elective surgery.
Common reasons for assessment include:
- Loose skin after pregnancy.
- Excess skin following significant weight loss.
- Lower abdominal skin folds.
- Abdominal muscle separation when clinically identified.
A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure. Body weight, skin quality, abdominal wall structure and general health are considered before surgery.
ABDOMINAL MUSCLE SEPARATION
The two rectus abdominis muscles run vertically along the front of the abdomen. Pregnancy and other factors can alter the connective tissue between them, creating a separation known as diastasis recti.
Not everyone undergoing a tummy tuck has this condition. When separation is present and surgical repair is considered appropriate, the abdominal wall may be tightened with sutures during surgery.
The decision is made after examination rather than being performed automatically.
HOW IS A FULL TUMMY TUCK PLANNED?
Planning begins with an assessment of the abdominal skin, muscle structure, belly button position, fat distribution and existing scars.
Previous caesarean section scars or other abdominal operations are reviewed because they may influence the surgical plan. Medication use, smoking or nicotine exposure, previous wound-healing problems and future pregnancy plans are also important.
These findings help determine how much skin can be addressed, whether abdominal wall repair may be appropriate and where the incision should be positioned.
WHERE IS THE INCISION?
The main incision is usually positioned across the lower abdomen. Its length depends on the amount and distribution of excess skin.
A second scar is generally present around the belly button because a new opening is created in the repositioned abdominal skin.
All surgical incisions result in permanent scars. They usually change in colour and texture during the months after surgery but do not disappear completely.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING SURGERY?
A compression garment may be used after surgery. Temporary drains may also be used in some cases to reduce fluid accumulation beneath the tissues.

Swelling, tightness and temporary changes in sensation are expected during early recovery.
Standing fully upright may feel uncomfortable during the first stage because the abdominal tissues are under temporary tension. Controlled walking is generally introduced early, while heavy lifting and strenuous exercise remain restricted.
Postoperative instructions may include wound care, sleeping position, compression garments, medication and physical activity.
Swelling decreases gradually. A significant amount usually changes during the first several weeks, while residual swelling and tissue firmness may remain for longer.
Exercise is resumed progressively. Light walking is introduced before heavy lifting, abdominal training or other activities that place significant stress on the abdominal wall.

DOES A FULL TUMMY TUCK REMOVE STRETCH MARKS?
A tummy tuck is not specifically designed to remove stretch marks.
Stretch marks located within skin that is surgically removed will be removed with that tissue. Stretch marks on the remaining abdominal skin may still be visible, although their position can change when the skin is repositioned.
CAN PREGNANCY OR WEIGHT CHANGES AFFECT THE RESULT?
Yes.
Pregnancy can stretch both the abdominal skin and abdominal wall and may create new muscle separation. Significant weight gain or weight loss can also change the abdominal tissues after surgery.
Future pregnancy plans and recent weight changes should therefore be discussed before surgery. A relatively stable body weight provides a more consistent basis for surgical planning.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE RISKS?
Full abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure and carries potential complications.
Possible risks include:
- Bleeding.
- Haematoma.
- Infection.
- Fluid accumulation.
- Delayed wound healing.
- Wound separation.
- Changes in skin sensation.
- Visible scars.
- Skin circulation problems.
- Abdominal asymmetry.
- Changes around the belly button.
- Blood clots.
- Anaesthesia-related complications.
Additional treatment or surgery may occasionally be required.
Nicotine can reduce blood flow to healing tissues. Smoking, vaping and other nicotine-containing products should therefore be discussed before surgery.
