EAR SURGERY IN ANTALYA
Ear surgery, medically known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to modify selected structural characteristics of the external ear. Depending on individual anatomy, surgery may address excessive ear projection, cartilage shape, differences between the ears or specific contour irregularities.
At Dr. Seckin Oksar’s practice in Antalya, otoplasty is planned after examining ear projection, cartilage folds, symmetry and the relationship between the ear and scalp. The surgical technique is determined according to the anatomical structures responsible for the existing ear shape.
WHAT IS OTOPLASTY?
Otoplasty involves reshaping or repositioning the visible external ear.
The external ear consists mainly of cartilage covered by skin. Differences in cartilage development, folding or position can influence how the ear looks and how far it projects from the side of the head.
Depending on the anatomy, surgery may involve:
- Creating or modifying cartilage folds.
- Reducing excessive ear projection.
- Repositioning selected cartilage.
- Addressing differences between the ears.
- Adjusting the relationship between the ear and scalp.
Not every ear requires the same surgical technique.
HOW IS EAR SURGERY PLANNED?
The ears are examined from the front, side and back.
The assessment may include:
- Ear projection.
- Antihelical fold development.
- Conchal cartilage.
- Ear height and width.
- Earlobe position.
- Cartilage stiffness.
- Relationship between the ear and scalp.
- Differences between the two ears.
- Previous scars or surgery.
Natural asymmetry is common. One ear may sit slightly higher, have a different cartilage shape or project differently from the other.
These differences are documented before surgery because exact mirror-image symmetry cannot be guaranteed.
WHAT CAUSES PROMINENT EARS?
Prominent ears can result from different anatomical characteristics.
One possible cause is limited development of the antihelical fold, an internal cartilage fold that contributes to the natural contour of the upper ear.
Another factor can be a relatively prominent conchal bowl, the deeper central cartilage structure of the ear.
Some individuals have a combination of these features.
For this reason, apparently similar ear projection may have different anatomical causes and require different surgical approaches.
AT WHAT AGE CAN OTOPLASTY BE CONSIDERED?
Ear surgery can be evaluated in both children and adults.
When surgery is considered during childhood or adolescence, timing depends on factors such as ear development, general health and the ability to understand and follow postoperative instructions.
Adults may also undergo otoplasty when medically suitable for elective surgery.
Suitability is therefore based on individual assessment rather than age alone.
WHERE IS THE OTOPLASTY INCISION?
In many otoplasty procedures, the incision is positioned behind the ear within the natural groove between the ear and scalp.
This provides access to the cartilage while placing the scar in a less exposed anatomical area.
The exact length and location depend on the structures being addressed.
Every surgical incision creates a permanent scar. During early healing, scars may appear pink, red or firm before gradually changing in colour and texture.
Individual scar formation varies.
HOW IS EAR CARTILAGE RESHAPED?
The technique used depends on cartilage anatomy and stiffness. Possible methods include:
Internal sutures
Internal sutures to create or support cartilage folds.
Cartilage scoring
Controlled cartilage scoring.
Cartilage removal
Limited removal of selected cartilage.
Repositioning
Repositioning of cartilage in relation to the scalp.
More than one technique may be used during the same operation when different parts of the ear require adjustment. The surgical plan is based on the anatomical cause of the ear shape rather than one standard otoplasty method.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING EAR SURGERY?
A protective dressing or headband may be applied during the early recovery period.

Swelling and bruising are expected after ear surgery.
Temporary symptoms may include:
- Tenderness.
- Tightness.
- Numbness.
- Increased sensitivity.
- Mild discomfort around the incision.
A headband may be recommended to protect the ears from accidental folding, pressure or impact during healing.
Sleeping directly on the operated ear may place pressure on the tissues, so sleeping position may need to be adjusted temporarily.
Physical activity is reintroduced gradually. Contact sports and activities with a risk of impact generally require more caution because the cartilage and internal sutures need time to stabilise.

I went to Antalya to originally get a scar revision and abdominal etching as due to a previous botched surgery, I was left with a horrible keloid scar and uneven abdominal. I was very hesitant at first due to my previous experience. But Dr.Seckin is well recommended by a close friend. He made me feel at ease with the operation. He corrected my scar and did a correction mini tummy tuck plus abdominal etching. I cannot recommend him enough. He is an amazing professional Doctor.

HOW LONG DOES SWELLING LAST?
The most visible swelling usually decreases progressively during the early recovery period.
Some residual swelling or tissue firmness may remain for longer.
The ears can also initially appear closer to the head than their later position because of swelling and surgical tension.
The final contour should therefore not be evaluated immediately after surgery.
CAN OTOPLASTY AFFECT HEARING?
Standard otoplasty modifies the visible external ear cartilage.
It does not operate on the middle or inner ear structures responsible for hearing.
However, any existing hearing problem, ear disease or previous ear surgery should be discussed during the medical assessment.
These conditions may require separate evaluation from cosmetic ear surgery.
CAN PROMINENT EARS RETURN AFTER SURGERY?
Some degree of change in ear position can occur after otoplasty.
Ear cartilage has natural elasticity and may exert forces during healing.
Internal sutures and cartilage-modification techniques are used to support the planned position, but some recurrence of prominence is a recognised possibility.
Protecting the ears during early recovery and following postoperative instructions are therefore important.

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure and carries potential complications.
Possible risks include:
- Bleeding or haematoma.
- Infection.
- Delayed wound healing.
- Changes in sensation.
- Persistent tenderness.
- Visible or raised scars.
- Ear asymmetry.
- Suture-related problems.
- Cartilage irregularities.
- Changes in skin circulation.
- Overcorrection.
- Recurrence of ear prominence.
- Need for additional surgery.
The individual risk profile depends on ear anatomy, medical history, surgical technique and healing characteristics.
EAR SURGERY AFTER PREVIOUS OTOPLASTY
Previous ear surgery can alter cartilage anatomy and create scar tissue.
Existing sutures, cartilage changes and previous incision locations may influence future surgical planning.
When further surgery is being considered, the remaining cartilage, skin, scar position and current ear contour must be evaluated before a new surgical plan is established.
